Message 56 - Posted: 18 Sep 2023, 13:35:36 UTC - in response to Message 55.

I have come to the conclusion that the problem is on the server side, not the client side. This is something the project admin is going to have to address, and nothing more to be done on the client side.
All 8 of mine are ok now I've put VB 7 on. Is this host on LHC? I checked but you have 258 hosts over there!! Does LHC report you have it enabled?

If it's this one, they say you do, or did last time you connected there:

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10830744

Yes, that is the same host at LHC. Same message under host details. Perhaps whatever the problem is, is common in the BOINC server code. So the same problem exists there too?

One other note: This is win11 pro. So that rules out the issue of win11 home not supporting virtualization.

Wow, I managed to misread your host at LHC, I thought it said you DID have virtualisation! That CPU supports it. You could try running this test program: https://leomoon.com/downloads/desktop-apps/leomoon-cpu-v/

One other note: This is win11 pro. So that rules out the issue of win11 home not supporting virtualization.
I wasn't aware of, and can't find anything on the web about, Home not supporting it.

Why do you have so many computers over there? Are you an enormous company or institution?

I am just an individual cruncher. I joined LHC way back in 2006, and have had many machines sine then.

WRT home vs pro: https://www.tomsguide.com/face-off/windows-11-home-vs-windows-11-pro#section-windows-11-home-vs-pro-virtualization

That app shows that VT-x is not enabled, which disagrees with what task manager says.

But 258? That's a large number in total even if they've expired. Or have you reinstalled and reconnected a lot?

Sounds like whether they include HyperV. I assume VB falls under third party and would work on both. My Windows 10 Home machine does VB ok.

That app shows that VT-x is not enabled, which disagrees with what task manager says.
I assume you mean the app I linked to, Leomoon. Does it correctly detect your other machines running virtualisation? If the app is working correctly, it looks like there's something up with your machine.

Yes, I was referring to Leomoon. I am not saying it is wrong. I am just saying it disagrees with what windows is telling me. And since windows already thinks it is turned on and working, I am not sure if there is anything left to do.

But it agrees with LHC and Uspex. Majority rule. And Windows is not the most reliable source of information.

Perhaps you should try some of the solutions in this post?

Leomoon says my AMD CPU Laptop that VT is Supported & Enabled but it has never got a Wu from here. The 2 Sager Laptops show that VT is supported but not enabled. I e-mailed Sager to ask them about it. The only thing in the BIOS I can find is a reference to VT-d & it is enabled. Not sure if that even has anything to do with Virtual Machine.

Uspex thinks that laptop doesn't support VT - "CPU does not have hardware virtualization support". Mine say "CPU has hardware virtualization support and it is enabled", suggesting if you had it but hadn't turned it on, it would say "CPU has hardware virtualization support but it is not enabled". But it's wrong, that CPU does have it, although AMD call it "AMD-V". Does Leomoon understand AMD chips? Have you found and enabled AMD-V in the BIOS? If you can connect it to LHC, what's it's opinion?

Yes, VT-d is what I turned on in all my Intel machines.

Ok lots of people are struggling .... I have 3 fairly old Window OS boxes all running work 1 task at a time on the project. Feel free to look at my computers they are available to be seen.

To restate things in a different perspective... Many of you have said my PC has this or that loaded or enabled etc... What is important is what this project "thinks" you have loaded or enabled .

I suggest that you go to your account on this project and show your computers..... once your computers that have been attached pop up... one at a time click the "details" at the far left on the screen and this will show you everything that the Project thinks each PC has and is configured with and enabled.

Everyone needs to slow down and take a breath... This is not a mission critical life or death situation. And no one should be rude and everyone needs to be a little more understanding. We are all part of the distributive computing family.

Please drop the term being bounced around "Banned" The fact that you can Post messages and communicate your frustrations means you are not Banned. People who are excessively disruptive can be Banned... and then they are "gone"

With a smile

Hosts can be banned while users are not. I have a client that received work, now it cannot with the message I posted. That is a ban.

You're the only person to have seen this message. Did you do something unusual with the computer, perhaps hammer the server for tasks?

Why would one hammer the server for tasks as currently the server communication is deferred for 909 seconds (~15 mins) between successive updates.

9/18/2023 1:46:41 PM | prediction | Requesting new tasks for CPU
9/18/2023 1:46:43 PM | prediction | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
9/18/2023 1:46:43 PM | prediction | Not sending work. Last request too recent. Please wait 767 seconds.
9/18/2023 1:46:43 PM | prediction | Project requested delay of 909 seconds

Hosts being banned is not the same as users being banned. Rosetta would ban hosts from their VB tasks if they failed a certain number. You could manually reset the ban in the computer's details screen on the website once you think you've fixed the problem of VB not working. Some projects will limit your host to one task at a time if they've been failing a lot, until such time as they successfully complete one.

On this project hosts do not get banned. Well mine haven't, even when they kept asking for work and didn't have VB version 7.

Users being banned, that never happens, they only get banned from the forum. No project has ever banned even me from running tasks. They don't want to lose computing power, and the Boinc server probably doesn't even have that function.

And anyway there's nothing to stop you just calling yourself by another name! They even suggest it in the last rule: "If your account is banned don't create a new one" - pretty much inviting you to do it.

Maybe you haven't been around long enough to see it before, but in the past there certainly have been projects outright ban people. It was typically in regards to cheating the points system though in some way. I will say that I don't read every project forum like I did a decade ago, so I cannot recall any doing it recently. And my memory doesn't recall specific projects anymore since there have been well over a hundred come and go over the years.

I haven't kept up with LHC after they merged all 4 of their projects into one and then converting the CMS dev project into the lhc-dev project. However, back in 2015 the process was to "send an e-mail to Ivan.Reid@CERN.ch with the Subject: "CMS@Home Request. This in turn will be used to provide you with an invitation code that is used during account creation." I didn't have to do this as my account was created before the invite codes were needed. I hope that helps you out a bit.

Some people set up batch files / scripts to ask for work regularly. It works for places like World Community Grid where GPU work is rare, and they let you ask very often. I just thought you might have something active on Uspex aswell. I see no other reason a host would get banned.

And what's with those numbers? You got (and I get similar):

9/18/2023 1:46:41 PM | prediction | Requesting new tasks for CPU
9/18/2023 1:46:43 PM | prediction | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
9/18/2023 1:46:43 PM | prediction | Not sending work. Last request too recent. Please wait 767 seconds.
9/18/2023 1:46:43 PM | prediction | Project requested delay of 909 seconds
The server clearly said "Please wait **767** seconds". So why does Boinc then say the project requested **909** seconds? 909 is not equal to 767.

Ah right, I can see that happening. I don't cheat points, I just annoy people on the forums by telling it like it is. Some people call that "being rude".

Ivan is currently in hospital with bleeding on the brain after he slipped in his kitchen, hit his head on the worktop, and fell unconscious for a few days. Luckily a neighbour found him. I won't bother him with such a request at the moment.

Sager told me to use the Task Manager, select Performance & the CPU Performance will come up, both Sager Laptops say Virtualization Enabled. So it's enabled in the BIOS under VT-d & the Task Manager says Virtualization Enabled but Leomoon says it isn't ... Weird, not much else I can do ... All 3 Box's don't get work from LHC or LHC Dev either, doesn't really give any specific reason just doesn't give them work ...
